Development of Chitosan and Polycaprolactone Based Trilayer Biocomposite Films for Food Packaging Applications

Chitosan (CH) films were obtained by casting method and sandwiched between 2 layers of polycaprolactone (PCL), which formed compression molding, to form trilayers. CH also incorporated with grape seed extract (G) (15%, w/w) and/or nanocellulose (N) (1-5%, w/w). The tensile properties, transmittance, opacity, water vapor permeability (WVP), antimicrobial activity, release behavior trilayers determined. elastic modulus (EM) trilayer not significantly affected the N content, while higher concentrations resulted in strength (TS) values. incorporation G led elongation values lower EM TS Film samples, including N, presented WVP values, whereas solubility inclusion (p<0.05). L* transmittance increased increasing content opacity decreased Furthermore, added showed a* b* addition caused slower from through selected food simulants. inhibited main pathogenic bacteria. fabrication PCL enhanced properties made these more appropriate for packaging.
